All about Valerian

Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) has been used as a medicinal herb to cure insomnia since at least the time of ancient Greece and Rome.
The reaction cats have to Valerian is totally different, as valerian root contains a terpenoid chemical valerinone and Actinidine,  a chemical which is  attractive to felines.
The active chemical Actinidine (in valerian) is similar in nature to nepetalactone (in catnip) provoking very similar responses, so cats that may not react to catnip (only about 90% do) may enjoy Valerian.
Agatha Christie exploited the attraction of Cats to Valerian in her work Five Little Pigs (Murder in Retrospect).
Research has found that Valerian can be too aromatic for some cats, so we developed our Special KK Herbal Mix, which is used in a wide range of toys.
